What is Pure movement?

Purity; a sense of clarity, freedom and strength. Movement; motion, a shift, transference or progression.

Pure Movement: a motion with clarity responding to or initiating a change in position.

The class I teach is essentially my interpretation of a number of different movement trainings that have lead me to this point. You can presume that since I have a dance, yoga and Pilates background there will be an aspect of these three things in my class. However, as stated by Desikachar, “Knowledge is not just memory. Everyday must be something new”. In this way, whilst the practice I teach has a theme running through it, like life, the class is constantly changing and evolving with my practice and the clients I work with.

I believe that physical, mental and spiritual health are inextricably linked. Arguably, the most tangible of these is physical health. After all, who feels great when they are ill or injured? Conversely, what happens to your body when your mind is stressed?

From this point I would suggest that the mind and body are a reflection of one and other. Making all your movement an expression of your consciousness and vice versa.

So how does this link to a yoga, pilates or a dance class? Quite simply if your movement patterns are an expression of yourself then exploring movements aimed to cleanse, elongate, strengthen and re-balance the physical body will automatically result in a clearer, refreshed and more positive state of mind. Bringing with it a greater level of physical and mental awareness.

The best way to find out about yoga, pilates or dance is to try it out. Coming from a dance background I enjoy a dynamic sense of fluidity and poise in my own practice which I use in my classes. This works well as a compliment to dance training but has also proved to be a pleasurable and successful technique for non-dancers alike. As a teacher I can guide and assist you through a practice which could lead you to a healthier, happier, more functional you. You will probably find just by spending a little time with yourself, your body and mind will perform better with greater clarity, freedom and awareness.
